Day 8

Lesson was scratched. Students stated they needed extra time on their research questions and objectives. Some students started out outlines. Lesson moved back

By the end of the class, students should be able to...
  • look at a sample literature review and identify common parts
  • identify common phrases and vocabulary words to report on sources
  • identify common phrases and vocabulary used to synthesize sources

REVIEW/EDIT
Go to students research questions and objectives and show students an example of research questions and objectives for analysis. Have students work to edit these...

1. Worksheet to Identify the parts
First, pull up the student sample UCA paper outline below of their literature review. They follow a simple logical procedure. The literature review is 10 pages long and should start each section with any needed definition and explanations before moving on studies done.
What the student UCA paper lacks is critical evaluation of any studies. He/She does do not much to justify why their study should be done. For most literature reviews, you are going to want to do this and carve out a research space for yourself. This is commonly found on the end of a literature review after you have discussed all the studies. Ask yourself where do you fit in the research story? What are these studies missing that your study will assist with?

Worksheet

2. PPT Presentation

Example Paragraphs: A look at language

Activity:

Have students think of academic vocabulary that connects studies...

  • shows similarity
  • shows contrast
  • show that they are the same
Then, have students share their vocabulary. Fill in words they are missing with Language for compare/contrast

3. Workshop
Work on organizing your outlines and building topic sentences for your paragraphs. Remember that you need topic sentences, academic language, headings, and subheadings. As groups work on this, I will be meeting with you to discuss your progress.
